Who Are These People?

January 9, 2010 at 2:14 am (Uncategorized) (, , , )

Earlier today, I heard on the radio that the financial market idjits were unpleasantly surprised by December’s job-loss figures. It seems economists expected a slight rise in employment, rather than the 85,000 loss that materialized.

I don’t know who these “economists” are or upon what evidence they based their expectations of job gains. In what alternate universe are these “economists” living? Was their prediction based on just throwing darts at a board or were they listening a bit too much to the happy “prosperity is just around the corner” baloney coming from the Wall Street/government crowd. If they actually knew how today’s job market functions, they would realize the holiday season has become the time of choice for downsizing (see my essay, “Happy Holidays, You’re Fired!) And with this kind of performance how are they keeping their jobs?

No wonder historian Thomas Carlyle called economics “the dismal science.”
